Custom Server Deploy

ThiagolpvThiagolpv Member Posts: 22 ★★

I plan to deploy a server on my own as a custom server and I hastwo options:

1) Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB of RAM, RX 5700 (playing + VM running as a server);

2) Ryzen 3 3200G, 16 GB of RAM as a dedicated server.

What should be the best choice?

    Edit: Ryzen 5 2400G (4/8) not Ryzen 3 3200G (4/4).

Running a squad server as a VM is never a good idea. The VM simply is not able to keep up with the demand in relation to the virtualization and passing the data back and forth to the physical CPU.

The 2400 is not going to get you very far, you will need a lot more processing power that it simply does not have.

With the 3600 you would be able to host an 80 Player server at the max, with the 2400, I would say you would struggle to reach that player count. My suggestion, if you are serious about hosting a server on the licensed browser, find a host that is trusted by the community. If you are just looking for a single server, consider instance based hosting. If you want more from the server, then consider renting a dedicated box.

Another point to consider when self hosting, do you have hair-pinning on your router? Do you have suffienct internet speeds? 100 Up/Down. Are you willing to deal with the eventual DDOS attacks coming into your network at home? A lot of factors to consider. If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them :D

Actually I looked and the 2400 isnt even approved to run a licensed server, it would be custom server only.

Here is a list breakdown for your reference of CPU's approved for hosting squad and their player counts.

    INTEL:
I7 6700K overclocked to 4.5 ghz and higher. (Not for 100 players, 80 Max)
    I7 7700K (Not for 100 players, 80 Max)
    I7 7700K overclocked (required for 100 players)
    I7 8086K (required for 100 players)
    I7 8700K (required for 100 players)
    I7 9700K (required for 100 players)
    I9 9900K (required for 100 players)
    I9-10900K (required for 100 players)

    XEON:
    Intel (R) Xeon (R) W-1290P (required for 100 players)

    AMD:
    Ryzen 5 3600 (Not for 100 players, 80 Max)
    Ryzen 5 3600X (Not for 100 players, 80 Max)
    Ryzen 5 5600X (required for 100 players)
Ryzen 7 2700X overclocked to 4.3 ghz and higher (Not for 100 players, 80 Max)
    Ryzen 7 3700X (required for 100 players)
    Ryzen 7 3800X (required for 100 players)
    Ryzen 7 5800X (required for 100 players)
    Ryzen 9 3900X (required for 100 players)
    Ryzen 9 5900X (required for 100 players)

I see now your post is for custom only. My recommendation, if its a smaller population server, 40-60 players, run it on the 2400. Stay away from running a server via VM. Never consider that as an option with squad :D

    Hi Fox!

I plan to run it only as a trainning server (20 players max).

ISP runs 30mbps down and 10mbps upload speed.

What you think should be best tickrate for this server? Is 120Hz too expensive for this system?

    Thank you for your time!

I found this line: LogPackageName: SearchForPackageOnDisk took 31.549s, but failed to resolve Port=7787.umap.

I already opened router and firewall ports. =(

I guess 7787 error isn't appearing anymore but there are many others about CAF:

Error: Couldn't find file for package /CanadianArmedForces/Maps/CAF_Manic-5/Manic-5_Level requested by async loading code. NameToLoad: /CanadianArmedForces/Maps/CAF_Manic-5/Manic-5_Level

General errors are expected. 120 is far too high, max should be around 45. Basically you will see errors in the log, they are normal, if the server will run you should be fine.

Also if you are hosting on the same network as you are playing, you should log off of steam on all machines in the network, launch the server, wait for it to load, then log back into steam after. Otherwise it will not reach out to query steam.

I can't see my server in Custom Browser list and no, I'm not running server in same network, they are in different places and uses different ISPs.

I don't know what's happening as my server don't appear in servers list.

Have you port forwarded both UDP and TCP for ports 7787 and 27165 assuming you are using the defaults? Also have you opened these on the firewall?

  • Fox_PSG_HostingFox_PSG_Hosting Member Posts: 13 ★★

I see on your screenshot your port forwards, but you have to specify the IP those ports are forwarded to. Otherwise it has no idea where to go.

Pretty wild that some Squad servers make enough dosh to warrant DDOS'ing the competition. Another dirty streak on the already-blackened face of Squad server administration, tbh.
