Bring back the VIP mode

Recommended Posts

In the early stages of Project Reality there was a gamemode called VIP, which was awesome!

For those of who never played it: The VIP person had to be transported with a black armored SUV, from point A to B through one checkpoint by US team. The other team had to kill him. US team had humvees and a littlebird (and maybe some light armored vehicle?! i dont remember), insurgents got crappy cars, but more spawnpoints, RPGs and mines ;)

I'd be really happy to see this gamemode again, here in Squad. Of course this need some modification because the severs with this mode were often empty, but that mode got some potential! It was really good when there were at least 10 ppl on the server. I think the main problems with this mode were that:

a.) The VIP person was dumb. -> maybe AI as VIP?

b.) The attackers never found the VIP -> Narrower maps than AlBasrah for this game mode, or more checkpoints.

c.) Attackers killed the VIP too quickly. -> US team can carry false VIPs too and they only lose if attackers kill the real VIP.

I would also like an other type of VIP missions, other than the old take him from A to B. Something like, rescue the VIP from a position that only the US team knows exactly, but its inside the attackers area.

What are your toughts?

This honestly sounds like it could be really fun. I'd be 100% down for playtesting a mode like this.

There were suggestion of "convoy" game mode which ultimately is a bit same. Answer to your "I would also like an other type of VIP missions, other than the old take him from A to B."

Would be cool if they had to follow like maybe 1 road they can choose out of 3.

That way insurgents could just send scouts forward on each road and warn the others.

This.

I don't like the thought of limiting all players to certain roads. How about the VIP has to visit certain towns according to a set schedule? That would be more realistic.

Just a few other thoughts. Before a round starts, perhaps impose a voting system to select the VIP, so that you aren't stuck with a complete idiot for the VIP. Also, a system should be created for changing the VIP mid-game in the event the VIP goes AFK or... is a complete idiot. Also, if the VIP strays from the team by a certain distance, the VIP player should be automatically kicked/killed and replaced by another player.

I use to play something similar to this in my private server for BF3&4 and it was too much fun. Pretty simple to set up, at the start of the round one player was forfeited to the enemy with no ammo for his weapon. Best time we had in the BF series.

I'm not sure knowing where you're going to get hit would be that much realistic.

The whole point of an ambush is the element of surprise.

I like the idea. One thing I would add to this game mode is road blocks. Road blocks that we have to blow up to continue the convoy.

You don't necessarily know you're going to get hit at any one particular location. There can be several possible destinations for the VIP. You can make it so that OpFor won't be present at all these locations due to logistical reasons. For example, you can have OpFor spawn at one random location on the map, and as such OpFor won't be able to set up an ambush at every location.

Also, if you just need to go from point A to point B, why not always set up an ambush near point B? That definitely takes out the element of surprise.

All BLUFOR would have to do in that case is to rush to B.

And always set up an ambush there, is again, what I was talking about, no element of surprise.

That's exactly what I said. Hence, that's why you need to create logistical hurdles to ensure an element of surprise. A few way-points for VIP, random OpFor team spawn, and an unknown extraction way-point for VIP - that should do the trick.

There's been previous discussions about the VIP gamemode. It's fun, I've liked it in the past although being the VIP itself usually sucks balls since you spend much of the time hiding, it's boring. I'd rather the VIP was a briefcase or some such visible asset that can be carried or set down.

Instead of a forced convoy situation, I prefer gathering intel from deaths as to how near the VIP is. Either by grid or straightline distance. This forces the VIP to stay on the move either on foot or by vehicle and requires good communication.

I remember playing VIP mode in CS....really fun...I propose instead of VIP that there be some loot like a truckload of gold be the VIP...each team must find and secure the loot and bring it all back to main base to win...something like that.

I like this idea! This way insurgents can narrow their path and slow them down a bit. Also they could torch wheel tires to show their teammates where the VIP is :P

B point gets some heavy defence. Lets say, two tank and two humvee. Both are non-moveing AIs - just to be sure they will protect point B, won't move and don't get bored sitting there- and they can search the horizon for a few hundred meters before the finish so the convoy is not forced to arrive there from one exact direction. ...but i'm Ok with random waypoints also.

If you got a pistol, you can somewhat defend yourself and i think it can be fun for the VIP too. Eg.: the convoy is under attack, their vehicles cant move anymore so they all jump out. The protectors get killed and waiting for respawn, so he need help from the commander. The commander is watching him from a UAV. The VIP should follow his commands on which direction he has to run in order to avoid the enemy until the reinforcement arrives at his location.

Transporting gold sounds like an interesting idea. It might be more realistic if you're transporting water and/or other necessities for local villages. BLUFOR escorts the truck to random locations for off-loading, and OPFOR must hijack the truck. That way you don't really need to deal with a VIP.

Also, to add an element of confusion, I'd suggest adding civilian AI just walking around, with appropriate penalties for killing them.

I seriously don't think a mode like this could work unless there's a reliable way for the Insurgents to know where the VIP is (or more importantly where he's going to be) without BLUFOR knowing that they know.

Once one team finds the gold or VIP a tracker beacon goes off showing location on map; this location beacon was put on VIP or gold and auto triggers when the VIP is taken and was put there by original holders of VIP or gold as insurence in case of theft...:)

Vip was an awesome game mode. I totally forgot about it. I really hope the devs add it or someone makes a mod for it.

IME, once the VIP comes under fire, even with a pistol, he's dead. How long can you last in a firefight in Squad now? It'd be a quick round if the VIP did anything except hide. = boring.

The only fun for a VIP comes in trying to move around the map ahead of the pursuers with a few other guys trying to protect him. If he gets spotted out in the open, the end is usally near.

It's one thing if you have to destroy a convoy to achieve your goals, it's another if you just have to kill ONE person in that convoy. That can be accomplished by one shot, nade, RPG, etc. Do you put them in armor then? They'd better never stick their head out.
