they have'nt said that they will replace player-controlled fixed-wings with the AI but they hinted that it is a hard job for them to implement such a thing

And planes operates on a completely different scale than a running guy. At 800km/h it takes around 20seconds to cross a 5km map. Not to mention the need of a 1500+ meter landing strip. So only way to really make manned planes work in a fps game is to slow them down and make everything about them extremely arcadish. (even our helos goes at about half their real life speed)
If manned air support really is needed its better to add attack helos.

1st Arma 2 did it long ago and it wasn't bad. 2nd like I said it would be nice for it to be player controlled, but stay as it is, very limited in time and usage, and then it disappear and you go back as a soldier... Why not? this would not make any difference aside that it would make them harder to use (AI will always aim perfectly, player wont, but can make a decision on the "fly"...).

 

Anyways, with or without player controlled aircraft I will always love this game, it wont make a big difference, having choppers now is already awesome.

 

If it is ever a thing it needs to be very limited in time and usage or it is OP... (I liked the way it was in the Arma 2 Wasteland mode in a few servers because you had to obtain them by doing a mission and then it was hard to land and resupply if you didn't have an entire team to back you up.. but that is another game and the maps were bigger so yeah)

 

Edit: Forgot to add that the A-10 and Su-25 should not change the artillery timer whenever it is used and vice versa.

 

Nevermind I just read the patch notes, I will take a look at how the timers act now ;)

Like the fact that the commander life is worth 5 tickets, didn't notice this!

in Project Reality all your questions are answered for example the size of the map and the speed of jets  the answer for it would be unlimitting map borders for jets only which gives them more space to manuver and turn and even land the aircraft on the landing strip easily

...how exactly can the Commander do this again? Can the Commander demote SL's and/or kick players out of the match for insubordination?

That would be nice if every SLs could easily check on the Commander Strategic/Tactical timers :). Nice patch today <3

We only have transport choppers and half the team wants to be a pilot as it is. Imagine what would happen with fixed wing assets.

Everyone wants to try the new shiney thing, eventually it'll go away. It happened with tanks before helis, IFV's before tanks, and the first vehicles back in the day.

Ah man, come one. The numerous scope bugs, inconsistencies and missing features still aren't in the known issues list. These were apparently passed on to the dev team months ago. I'm not saying to drop everything and fix them, but surely it's not unreasonable to expect them to be listed by now.

I think it's better this way actually. Game area is too small for player controlled aircraft anyways. Wouldn't be realistic. Except for choppers that is.

I don't know what servers do you play in, but most of the ones I join have rules and once you have two (if there is two helis) pilot squads made no one else will make a third one and if someone does we just tell him to change...

Also as you can see I said that it should stay the same but be player controlled in the futur, meaning you dont require a pilot, the commander will be the one using it, that was the idea. (but maybe its a bad idea and it should be a dedicated role, then I would agree with you, but on servers with rules and admins that would not be a big issue, only the first days)

 

Anyways the more I play the play test and the more I think that it is good as it is and that we don't need player controlled aircrafts since if its only for 30s of usage there is not really a point imo. One thing tho, the Airstrike timer need to be completely dissociated with the Artillery timer, and should not bring one up once you use the other. Because right now I don't really want to use the airstrike knowing that it will raise the artillery if I do around the 1h40 mark for example (I'm sure you get what I mean).

 

I have to add one issue I noticed for you OWI: When calling the UAV as a commander and once it is active, sometimes the UAV icon wont be there on the top left of the commander map and thus I will not be able to actually use it. Its there, in the sky, and I am next to a HAB but I can't use it :/ .

Problem, i just want to invert it for the helicopter, not the normal aiming. so i dont know if thats really possible

Some really great changes in here, I was concerned that Commanders with squadmates might have trouble as they wouldn't be in the field setting Rallies etc, but looks like most times it's a 3man squad which is the Commander and a vehicle asset like a tank or heli, or logistics assets which is a nice setup i.e. leaving it in the hands of players to figure out was probs a good move.

 

Loving the buddy rally nerf, movements are more decisive when you've overrun an enemy. (always thought only insurgents should get this anyway)

 

Voice overs, very nice but whoever did the Russians really needs to see a smoking cessation specialist!

 

Vehicle reset, very nice and well implemented to still make it annoying to flip so well done!

 

HUD changes - lovely.

 

I actually liked that people had to stop to look at their maps, I've been a chronic 'shot while running with map up' SL for ages

 

Are the effects from helo rotors new when landed? don't remember them but lovely!

 

FPS increase - lovely! The lighting is nice!

 

Basically, there's nothing in the update that I don't like. So well done, and thanks!
