Free look / TrackIR Support

Recommended Posts

Still a "would like to have," but not something we're currently working on. (We still have some biggies like choppers to work on first. =))

@Gatzby

Any chance that controller support will be added with helicopters? I've been waiting to assign my hotas throttle to normal vehicles for a while now to be able to drive really freaking slow without needing a hill. (as in currently the game does not recognize any inputs I put in with my joystick or throttle)

Not sure -- I think there's too much development work between now and then to say, but will definitely keep my ears perked.

Is this something that a modder could do for you guys?  Then you could roll it in later?

That's a great idea.

Can you imagine always having free look until you ADS... I think if you implemented it and demonstrated it, people would realize how awesome it would be.

I don't have a steam controller though and I want to use my already bought hotas setup to use with it.

I have both TrackIR and a Steam controller. And it's nice having both in ArmA III. With the Steam controller especially, you rarely have to even touch the keyboard or mouse. As HippoRider mentioned, Existential Egg has a great profile for Squad - check it out on YouTube to see how it works.

I would like to see the TrackIR implemented for the freelook! Hopefully, it will get added.

Have you been using Steam Controller? How well does it work? And how's Egg's profile? I'm just starting to get back into mine after being away for a long time.

With Beta 17 I have tried to simulate head tracking in helicopters with Opentrack but with no luck. You can map head tracking to mouse movements via mouse emulation (in Opentrack) but there are limitations in game.

The idea:
Activate freelook in game (in helicopter)
Mouse emulation in Opentrack (headtracking moves mouse -> moves camera)

Pilot helicopter with joystick

Since you can manipulate helicopter with keyboard buttons while freelook, I thought that it will work with joystick too. But looks like game can work with only one analog input at a time. You can freelook with headtracking but joystick input do not work in freelook mode, only keyboard works. Also there is an ugly camera clipping in freelook mode on Pilot seat, pilot head not moving, only camera moves (so you will see helmet, mouth, eyes from inside of "head"). I didn't messed up with joystick in game, maybe someone can repeat steps with success, write back then.

Mouse emulation (Opentrack settings):

Pretty sure ALT is free on the keyboard, right? If so, freelook can work just the same as ArmA. That'd be awesome.

That's what I thought, we already have free look. It just limits the free look to the physical limitations of the human neck.

I can't even believe we're still talking about TrackIR implementation.  TrackIR support should have been added along time ago.  Now there's choppers it's a no-brainer to have TrackIR support.  Of course, people who don't own a TrackIR will be selfishly arguing against TrackIR support with some BS advantage argument. TrackIR makes games immersive and Squad should have implemented it years ago. All the little snotty nose cry babies who don't own a TrackIR will of course continue to argue against something that is just common sense.

I can't even believe we're still talking about TrackIR implementation. TrackIR support will be added when it's appropriate. Now there's choppers it's a no-brainer to keep developing the core gameplay (100 player servers, optimization, etc.) before adding less important features like TrackIR support. Of course, people who are toxic will be selfishly arguing that a nonexistent group of people don't want TrackIR support with some BS argument. TrackIR makes games immersive and Squad should implement it when it's appropriate like they have previously stated. The toxic players who come up with invalid reasons to complain and spread discord will of course continue to act like children and name-call even when TrackIR is released.

Please act civil and be patient. We all love this game and all of us can be critics, but I'd like to do so constructively and positively.
