Close air support

Recommended Posts

Hello Squad devs and my fellow players, So to get straight to the topic, ive recently been thinking about possibility of bringing close air support to Squad, kind of like how the platoon commander in Post Scriptum can call in air support. However, the idea i'm proposing is that first off, squad implements Post Scriptum's different squad types (infantry, logistics, armor) in a way that will smoothly adapt to the current game. Second off and finally, i'd propose a squad type that solely deals with close Air Support roles and that only consists of 4 member. Maybe name it JTAC  because that's literally all its dealing with. Within the squad, you'd have possibly one TACP specialist, a radioman that the TCAP has to rely on, a medic, and one regular ol' infantry. On the equipment side of things, the TCAP could have limited ammo, bino's, and a laser designator. The radioman could have the same loadout as a general infantry, but with bino's and the radio. With that, the TCAP would have to be within like 5 meters of the radioman to call in the strikes, and the strikes could not be spammed (waiting times). This is all just a suggestion however, but i think you guys might like the idea. Anyways, remember fellas, it do be like that.

Dont like the idea of on guy who can bomb away every thing with only one mousclick on the map.

To much gamplay impact for nor skill.

Safe to assume you're thinking of the conventional forces like U.S. RU GB, but what are you giving Militia and Insurgents in return?

John Carmack was able to program close air support into a single class in ET:QW for both GDF & Strogg. RS2: V does it with a single person as well.  I certainly don't see it taking 4 people to do such a job and taking  even more people off the flags. There's already enough "hey, we're the mortar guys" or "hey we're the TOW guys" and we're gonna be a kilometer away over here.

The future Commander role in Squad might utilize something similar. With the GDF you'd either laze the target and bring in a precision artillery attack or if you wanted really close support you could throw a special grenade and in several seconds there would be a bombing run from right to left in front of you.

It's just like RL. SL radios for support, marks coords and brrrrt. Limit it by having a long cooldown, or having to pass it through the commander if we get one. lt'll only be effective if the coords are accurate and the enemy doesn't move, just like mortars, which hardly require any more skill than that.

I mean we dont need a piolit and a A10.

Its all off map and not player based. The mortas need a morta squad with real players.

It would be cool if we get helicopters and then a little bird with miniguns and rockets.

Yeah i think this could work out pretty well if the ETA is like 1-2 minutes and you can only use it three times max. Also have it so that AA can take it out.

You could shoot down AI aircraft in RO2, (UE3) I don't see why you couldn't shoot down an A-10 or similar here. In which case, if it goes down, that's it for CAS.... seems fair

Is the compersion between RO2 to SQUAD not a little bit to big!? Waht i`am aiming at is the timeframe from 1945 to 2018, the blasting power of an A-10 bomb should be mutch more devastating as in RO2.^^

No, I was just pointing out that in an earlier version of the engine, you could shoot down off map airsupport, so, I'd expect you could do it in this version too.

We might see something like this added more as a commander tool or triggered in some other way rather than an individual role. I think Post Scriptum has done a great job of illustrating the possibilities during testing.

I think any kind of off-map stuff or AI air support is a terrible idea. You want artillery? Mortars. You want CAS? Helos are coming. Players must be involved.
