More than 30 GB to install an update -- please no

Recommended Posts

Steam required me to have more than 30 GB of empty space in my expensive SSD just so I'd be able to install the V10 update.

This is too much, can't it be reduced?

Short answer: No.

Devs could reduce it but it'd involve 'unlocking' game assets to be more modular and thus easier to patch vs the current complete unpacking and repacking process.

Can't the re/packing process be done in RAM memory?

This also helps to avoid SSD's wear (not to mention the speed increase).

Either way I shouldn't be required to constantly have 30GB of empty space (which adds up to the size of the update itself, v10 ~ 7GB)

There are technologies which facilitates handling RAM, such as RAM Disk.

Most users have 8GB of RAM or more.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of it either... but hopefully it's just an Alpha issue. If you have a HDD you could copy that 7GB folder over to your D:\ HDD if you have one, redirect steam to that folder, update that folder then copy it back to your C:\... Maybe it would work haha.

The other choice is just to uninstall v10 and install from scratch... that should only require the base 7gb... maybe?

It's the way Steam does pre-allocation that tends to cause this.
