Why aren't you playing Squad?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Keeping up with school, relationships, and other responsibilities takes up most of my time. But besides that, I'm really holding out for the suppression rework. I've always wanted to experience a teamwork and communication-centric FPS where application of authentic fire and maneuver tactics is central to success.

I'm sure we can all agree that suppressive fire is crucial in any modern firefight. While most of us would hope Squad steers clear of ultra hardcore milsim territory, I would like the game to at least impart the impression of realism in a manner fairly accessible to non-milsim nerds. Currently, however, suppressive fire is seldom seen in-game because, as many have mentioned on the forums, it mostly results in giving away your position for negligible benefit (just some screen blurring that enemy players can work around).

The gameplay in Squad just won't feel right for me until gaining fire superiority and fixing the enemy in place becomes a key priority during firefights. Call me nitpicky, but that's where I'm at. What are you guys holding out for?

I've pretty much exhausted most of my entertainment and surprises in V9 in general. So, I'm waiting for V10 to come.

Because my games go one of the following ways:

- We pub stomp the other team, because 1 of our pubbie SL's is a little better than what the other team has (when we're even trying to have semi even teams)

- We get rolled because of the imbalance in SLs

- I SL and deal with new SLs and new players all game (and win or lose) after several rounds that gets tedious - win or lose.

- I join a friends squad and just 1 man the vehicles. And same thing as above... that works for a little bit, but gets boring after a while and I usually feel bad for my SL having to deal with the idiocy.

Very rarely have I had extremely even hard fought matches where we spent the entire game duking it out over 1 or 2 points. Part of the issue is that I want to play with my friends... who, like myself all have a lot of hours (700-2700+) in the game and are competent players to say the least. Which means we will usually roll the server.

I still play... but my sessions are not nearly as long as they were even just a few weeks ago. I also think that the overall quality of players were diluted over Christmas (Steam gifts, or sales or whatever). I mean I'm glad more people are playing, but as much patients as I have... my tolerance for stupidity has gone down a lot. I'm sure it'll pick up in V10... but I see it being quieter until then. Just "3 weeks" away right? ;)

For me, it's because the rush meta is craptasticly boring, and after experiencing the other wonders of v10 (vaulting and gunplay changes), I literally can't even be bothered to boot up v9. The one game I played post v10's weekend was just disappointing, so I'm holding out for the next release, at which I'll probably sink another few hundred hours into it.

Edit: For the record, I would love more punishing suppression effects as well.

Lack of good servers with good Ping.

I live in CZ so i can join the russians - which i don't do

or play on one of those german Servers, they usually give me best pings

but there its hard to find an international Squad :(

I too want much more suppression effects. Now v10 we have GImpy and m240b.. their job is to suppress. When you are on the receiving end.. it should be a drastic effect.

I didn’t want to go back to v9 but there isn’t a single game that come anywhere near Squad!!! So had no choice

so the question is why aren’t you all playing squad??? I can’t see one single reason good enough!!!

V9 still blows every other game out the water by a long long way especially when playing clan be it public games or competitive/friendly games

GET ON!!!!!!

Wouldn't it make sense that the majority of key holders that no longer play Squad most likely will never even see this thread? Just saying.

That said, your observations are certainly backed up by online statistics. I'd have to imagine there will be a considerable influx of new and old players once v10 drops but once the hype is over after a couple of weeks but I'm guessing the average daily players will stabilize at around 2500-3000 like they always do.

Taking that into consideration you'd have to sit down and categorize why there are over half a million owners and so few players. In my opinion it's the fact that Squad has no official "face" so to speak. Ergo there are are no officially hosted vanilla servers and no official ambassadors to the moderate said servers and guide new players.

Just imagine you're a new player and your first exposure to Squad is rife with clan cronyism, rushing and pubstomping. Add to all that the porn talk, TK orgies etc and now just imagine how many people went away for good scratching their heads saying wtf just happened to me?

Bottom line, its my opinion that until OWI hosts and moderates official servers there will be no growth. People will continue to purchase the game, play a few hours then move on.

I agree with that. It actually makes sense!

I think squad wouldn't be half the game it is without clans helping to host servers and provide feedback.  That being said it is lacking in proper public servers and there has been a massive increase in the socially inept numpties that will frequent them.

and I'm still playing but really is painful even with the bugs in v10 ..v9 just feels yesterday.

"Helping"? Private servers host all the servers and represent the first thing a new player sees when they enter the game.

That said, I politely disagree. Whilst I certainly appreciate clan hosts more than most average players to the tune of hundreds of dollars I've contributed to them over the last year and a half it's a simple fact that private servers have their own agenda that is separate from OWI in some respects.

This is why private servers should not be the vanguard and instead the "Front Office" of Squad should be around 10 official servers staffed by goodwill ambassadors so to speak.

I'm not basing my opinion on a "hunch" or a "gut feeling" either. The statitical timeline shows exponential growth in sales contrasted with an opposing flatline of players with occasional bumps corresponding to free weekends and patch releases.

I don't know, maybe I'm way off base. I'd like to hear anyones explanation of how a game with over half a million sales only has 2500 daily players and plenty of room with literally hundreds of empty servers.

Who will these "goodwill ambassadors" be? What will they get for dedicating an absolutely massive amount of time needed to do this? It's a mammoth ask for something like that to happen which is probably why it's never been done before.

As for the number of sales to players ratio, it's very similar stats to RS2:V I believe. Very niche games.

Would love this to be a thing in Squad!! Excellent wording YankeeSamurai, and I totally agree with you. There are many gameplay tweaks I'd like to see in order to maximize this idea of "Teamwork and communication-centric gameplay, where application of authentic fire and maneuver tactics is central to success."

I won't go into detail on all those here but the suppression mechanics, the wounding and medical system, the respawn mechanics, Squad to Squad cohesion mechanics, resupply mechanics could all use a "filling out" to get Squad to that robust level of teamwork and cohesion where authentic fire and manuver tactics become vital to success and actually add to the enjoyment of the game!

The wonderful thing is squad is already in fantastic shape to get there, and unlike its predecessor there is no hard coded limits to prevent it from reaching its awesome potential! Great things are coming!!

My guess it will be on a voluntary basis, as for incentive or compensation it could be a special tag on the forums as well as limited admin privileges on these official servers. Not any different than joining a clan that runs a private server themselves.

So basically giving people (not OWI) admin access to "official" servers with no guarantee of anyone even joining. Sorry but something like that will probably never happen.

My main reason I am not playing is I can't reach my keyboard. By that I mean I am 1900 miles away from my PC. When I've tried to play the thing that puts me off is the lack of good servers I am able to join. I can sit and wait 15-20 min in the queue to join only to find the map changes and a large portion of the players bails. I tend to hang around hoping it'll fill up again for a good round but generally by the end game it's filled and players bail again. Hard to get a good round in these days it seems.

Did I not make this clear enough? OWI hosts and staffs official servers. Just like every other game company. It's simply the cost of doing business.

not sure why that's a bad thing, it all comes down the one you join... I can join many a bad server in other games hosted by the company that designed it.. all they do is put an automated voting system in there and you end up being vote kicked by the  14 year  fat boy who suddenly found his vocation in life trolling others, whilst hiding in his dark room swilling coke.
